La réalisation d’une insémination artificielle intra-vaginale est un acte simple permettant de remplacer une insémination naturelle lorsque les conditions ne sont pas remplies pour réaliser une saillie naturelle. 

La semence est déposée le plus près possible du col de l’utérus à l’aide d’une sonde stérile. Plusieurs modèles de cathéters d’insémination sont disponibles sur le marché. Ils se distinguent par leur taille, la présence d’un système de gonflage et une valvule anti-reflux.  

Lors de la mise en place de la sonde, l’opérateur doit éviter le cathétérisme accidentel de l’urètre et suivre la forme du vagin de la chienne qui présente des plis œdémateux pendant la période d’œstrus.  

Une fois la semence déposée, l’arrière-train de la chienne est surélevé et une stimulation digitale est réalisée pour éviter le reflux de la semence et aider la progression des spermatozoïdes dans le tractus génital.

Intra-vaginal artificial insemination is an easy procedure that can replace the natural mating when the stud dog or the bitch are unable to reproduce naturally. The semen is placed closer than possible to the cervix by a sterile catheter. Different models are available, main differences concern the size, the presence of an inflatable cuff and a valve to prevent leakage. Placing the catheter in the vagina, the operator should avoid accidental catheterism of the urethra and follow the shape of the canine vagina that shows œdematous folder during œstrus.  

After the injection of the semen the hindquarters of the bitch are elevated and digital stimulation performed to avoid leakage of semen and helps the sperm cells to advance through the genital tract.
